Why Accidents Happen and What to Do About It

Brad Peck, Health, Safety and PSM Director, Gulf Coast Authority

Room Location TBD

Research has shown that decision-making processes are influenced by the subconscious, rather than the rational mind.  The relevance of this research to workplace safety is significant, given that most training programs operate under the assumption that workers behave “rationally” in the work environment.   This presentation seeks to further support the notion that workplace hazards extend beyond physical agents or conditions, and into the mind of the worker.  Points of interest from the research and publications of renowned behavioral science experts Dr. Todd Conklin, Dr. Daniel Kahneman, and Dr. Richard Thaler will be discussed.  These experts suggest that people are hard-wired to make certain kinds of mistakes, and that by improving our understanding of how humans act and react, business leaders might use that understanding to positively influence future outcomes.
