Why Accidents Happen and What to Do About It

Brad Peck, Health, Safety and PSM Director, Gulf Coast Authority

Expo A1

Research has shown that decision-making processes are influenced by the subconscious, rather than the rational mind.  The relevance of this research to workplace safety is significant, given that most people operate under the assumptions of workers behaving “rationally” and “logically” at all times in the work environment.   This presentation seeks to further support the notion that workplace hazards extend beyond physical agents or conditions, and into the minds of workers and managers.  Points of interest from renowned behavioral science experts Dr. Jens Rasmussen, Dr. Daniel Kahneman, Dr. Richard Thaler, and Dr. Sidney Dekker will be discussed.  These experts suggest that people are hard-wired to make certain kinds of mistakes, and that by improving our understanding of how humans act and react, business leaders might use that understanding to positively influence future outcomes.
