Air Monitoring Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

Following the release of chemicals to the environment, characterizing airborne impacts is of paramount importance. Whether through evaporation or combustion, these chemicals may potentially impact downwind receptors or present the risk of onsite soil and water contamination. The recent proliferation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) has presented environmental professionals the opportunity to more accurately characterize the potential impacts from both emergency and standard emissions from facilities and transportation incidents. From an exposure perspective, the evaluation of air concentrations of chemicals of concern is important. From a mass balance standpoint, determining the flux of emissions can assist with determining how much material remains on site; and determining the airborne concentration of chemicals of concern is a critically important component of ground-truthing the estimates of release totals and closing the loop on mass balances. This presentation will present findings of air monitoring using UAVs, and propose potential solutions for future projects.
