Best Practices on Challenging Remediation Projects Near Residential Communities

Razmik Gozalians, Vice President, American Integrated Services, Inc.

Floral A1

A manufactured gas plant (MGP) located adjacent to a hospital, residential dwellings and a strip mall , operated from 1875 to 1930. MGP generated waste in the form of VOCs, PAHs, tar acids, creosote, and coal tar pitch. The cleanup challenges included strong odors and the potential release of harmful VOCs. To comply with guidelines regarding the PELs for Benzene and Naphthalene,  air modeling mandated the remedial activities be performed in the confines of a large tent as well as negative pressured air treatment units to strip VOCs and odors. An onsite groundwater extraction and treatment unit was also used. A mandate limiting the number and timing of the truck trips and complete decontamination of the trucks was followed. This presentation will detail best practices that were implemented to allow for the excavation, transportation and disposal of impacted soil as well as  importing and compacting clean fill with no community complaints or notice of violations from any regulatory agencies.
