How Chemistry Makes Summer Safer, Cooler, and More Fun

We’re in the thick of the Texas summer—and anyone who’s lived through one knows it’s not for the faint of heart. But even in the height of summer, Texans are out enjoying life—cooling off in pools, firing-up backyard grills, heading to the beach, and making memories at ballgames and festivals.

What makes all that possible? Chemistry.

Behind the scenes of nearly every summer tradition is a chemical innovation that keeps us safe, cool, and comfortable. From the materials in our clothing and coolers to the science behind sunscreen and clean water, the chemical industry makes summer better in ways you may never have considered.

With record-breaking temperatures becoming the norm, the ability to stay cool is critical—not just for comfort, but for health and safety. Modern air conditioning systems rely on advanced refrigerants that are more efficient and environmentally safe, thanks to innovations from the chemical industry.

Behind the walls of your home and office are high-performance insulation materials that help maintain cooler indoor temperatures, reduce energy consumption, and lower electricity bills.

Chemistry also plays a role in what we wear. Lightweight, moisture-wicking synthetic fabrics, made possible through polymer chemistry, are designed to handle the demands of a hot Texas summer. Whether you’re hiking in Big Bend, working in your yard, or watching a Little League game, these materials help regulate body temperature and enhance comfort.

Sunscreen is one of the most powerful tools we have to prevent skin cancer, and it’s a marvel of modern chemistry. Today’s formulations are more effective and more versatile than ever—offering broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays. They’re designed to resist water and sweat, stay effective longer, and suit a range of skin types and conditions.

And it’s not just what you apply to your skin—UV-protective clothing, which incorporates coatings or special fiber treatments, adds another layer of protection for people who spend long hours in the sun, whether for work or play.

It wouldn’t be summer without water—and chemistry helps ensure that the water we swim in and drink is clean and safe. Chlorine, a staple product of the chemical industry, continues to play a vital role in pool sanitation by eliminating harmful bacteria and keeping our swimming pools and jacuzzies safe.

Chemistry is also essential for municipal drinking water systems, providing safe, potable water to millions of Texans.

Summer cookouts are another staple of the season, and chemistry is working behind the scenes there, too. Propane for grilling, food-grade packaging that keeps food fresh, and insulated coolers made from durable polymers are all made possible by innovations of chemistry.

And whether you're headed to a summer festival or a family road trip, fuels and lubricants developed by chemical engineers keep engines running efficiently, even in high heat. Additives enhance performance and reduce wear and tear—extending the life of your vehicle and reducing emissions along the way. And high temperature plastics and synthetic parts provide comfort and increase fuel efficiency for your car.

In the stands or on the field, chemistry is present in stadium seats, synthetic turf, sports equipment to keep players safe, and even the vibrant colors of team uniforms and promotional merchandise.

The Texas Chemistry Council is proud to represent an industry that not only fuels fun in the summer but also supports the economy and strengthens communities across the state. Our member companies are investing in technologies that are safe and sustainable, create high-wage jobs, and support education, infrastructure, and emergency preparedness.

This summer, while you’re enjoying a fireworks show, casting a line in the Gulf, or relaxing in the air conditioning after a day in the sun, remember that chemistry is part of the experience—often invisible, but always essential.

Texas summers may be intense, but thanks to the power of chemistry, we have the tools to thrive in the heat, stay safe in the sun, and keep the good times rolling.
