Management of Change — Personnel During Economic Downturns

Our current economic conditions have required that some companies utilize their employees in roles they have not traditionally been accustomed to working. In some cases management of change - personnel guidelines may not be detailed enough to cover these unusual circumstances. Following sound SHE principles and guidelines to ensure a successful transition is critical. This presentation will address those SHE guidelines and principles and explore different tools currently being used.

Results of a Multi-faceted Ergonomic Program

Brown and Caldwell has developed a multi-faceted office-based ergonomic program based on the marketing technique known as the Quiet Surround, which basically presents the same message in a variety of media (verbal, email, poster, etc.). The program is anchored by the Speak Up campaign and includes monthly emails, discussions in meetings, information packages presented to employees, and posted materials all designed to encourage employee participation. This presentation will review the program to date, identify the effectiveness of the program, and preview the latest tool: an online office-based ergonomic evaluation designed to be taken by the employee.

Lessons Learned from the Lyondell Houston Refinery Crane Incident

On Friday, July 18, 2008, the collapse of a crane at our Houston, Texas, refinery resulted in four fatalities and six persons injured. A team of LyondellBasell personnel along with Deep South Crane and Rigging, and Wyatt Field Service Company, completed an extensive investigation into the cause of the accident in cooperation with local and federal agencies. This presentation takes the investigation root causes and solutions and applies them to LyondellBasell plant operations and potentially to others as "Lessons Learned."

In order for these actions to be most effective and have a lasting impact on a company's HES program, they need to be written smartly and tracked systematically. This presentation will review the key components of an effective action item management program and how having one will enable some of the best ideas to enhance an HES program.
