Poly Fluorinated Alkyl Substances (PFAS): How Toxicology Affects Clean-Up Criteria

PFAS, a group of emerging contaminants, are receiving widespread scrutiny due primarily to groundwater contamination concerns. Due to their widespread water solubility, releases have contaminated drinking water wells and may pose a potential risk to human health. Because of toxicity, bioaccumulation and persistence of PFAS compounds, industry must consider the impacts in both the workplace and the external environment. Provided will be an understanding of the toxicity of PFAS, how this information is used to develop risk-based values and discuss regulatory strategies used by different countries and health agencies. Dr. Cox will also discuss the primary environmental concerns and the actions regulatory agencies are taking to evaluate and manage risk from PFAS contamination. Finally, Dr. Cox will discuss the differences between health advisories (HAs) and Maximum Contaminant (MCLs) for drinking water and how these different criteria impact the site decision making process.
