Benchmarking is an historical widely used method to identify how a company compares to others. An important aspect to consider is “What do you want to do with that information?” Some just want to see how their company stacks up with others (top quartile, industry leader, world class, etc.). Others use it as a way to identify possible good ideas about the way others do things in hopes of determining practices to adopt/integrate into your own operations. It’s important to decide on the front end what your goal is. This presentation will cover the pros and cons of these aspects and lessons from doing numerous benchmarking studies over the past 30 years.
