Ergonomics Revolution: Assessment and Injury Prevention Using Wearable Technology

Expo A2

Speaker: Anthony Harris, MD, MBA, MPH, Associate Medical Director, WorkCare

This presentation will explore a safety-oriented approach that encourages employees to become active participants in their own care in the event of a non-emergency work-related injury. The presenter will explain how telephonic first-aid-level guidance provided by occupational physicians and nurses at the onset of an injury or muscle aches and pains can be used as an effective alternative to a traditional model in which a supervisor with no medical training has to make a clinical referral decision. Case studies will be used to show how early reporting and immediate intervention can be used in the field to help reduce over-utilization of medical services and costs while improving return-to-work rates and employee satisfaction scores. The presenter will also discuss recent injury prevention innovations, including the use of mobile health applications, wearable bio-sensors to ergonomically assess individual injury risk and non-OSHA-recordable massage techniques.
