With increasing frequency, chemicals that have not historically been regulated as contaminants are being detected in surface water and groundwater, including drinking water resources. Some of these chemicals may pose risks to human health and the environment. These so-called emerging contaminants, such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and 1-4 dioxane, are being identified at sites throughout the country, and are increasingly drawing the attention of regulators and the plaintiffs' bar. This presentation will provide an overview of emerging contaminants, the current regulatory landscape, key cases, and strategies for assessing and managing risks from emerging contaminants.
