Eleven Things That Saved Apollo Eleven

Next month on the 20th of July, the world will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11, the first mission to land men on the Moon. Because Apollo 11 dealt with serious space (industrial) incidents equally as threatening as those that faced Apollo 13, our speaker will explain how each was overcome during the July, 1969, voyage of Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins to the Moon. The presenter, Jerry Woodfill, is uniquely qualified to share these stories. Jerry was the Apollo 11 Spacecraft Warning System Engineer for both the Columbia mother ship and the Eagle lander, the only NASA employee assigned this responsibility. After 53+ years, Jerry continues as a NASA JSC employee in the Engineering Directorate of the Johnson Space Center. He will explain incidents that might have ended in tragic disaster. As the Apollo 11 mission’s spacecraft warning system engineer, Jerry Woodfill witnessed these incidents first hand at the Manned Spacecraft Center’s Mission Evaluation Room (MER). He and the Apollo spacecraft engineers contributed to successfully saving the mission from failure. His presentation titled “Eleven Things That Saved Apollo 11” will detail each threat from a technical perspective. All provide valuable lessons for industrial EHS Seminar participants. Apollo 11’s threats to the crew were every bit as ominous as any faced by Apollo 13’s astronauts and industrial facilities.
