Technology is a way of life, and part of virtually everything that we encounter in our daily living. We utilize these tools to better our lives, and make information more readily accessible. In the occupational health arena, occupational health professionals (OHP’s) continue to find innovative ways to improve their practice and improve safety, health and environmental outcomes within their organization. We do this by looking for virtual resources to improve the ability to diagnose, as well as educate our patients. In order to better utilize and understand these resources, we must be media literate and understand the technology available to include in our occupational health practices. OHP’s must take an active role in understanding how these virtual tools can be used to strengthen their personal knowledge, as well as be resources for their employees. This presentation will review the concept of media literacy, and will explore the role of virtual tools, such as mobile applications "apps", in the workplace. Review of regulatory agencies, as well as specific apps utilized in occupational health practice to improve employee safety, health and wellness will be discussed.
