Improving Hazard Recognition and Mitigation

William Chidester, Sr. ESSH Manager, Ascend Performance Materials, LLC

Expo A2

In late 2018, the Ascend Performance Materials Chocolate Bayou Plant began a journey to develop fundamental skills to our employees for recognizing hazards and them mitigating them. This presentation would share the work and accomplishments achieved to date. Starting with the identification of the need to instill this basic skill in our work force, to working with Decision Point Associates, Inc. to develop and deliver training on the chosen tool (Hazard Recognition Plus), and through implementation and maturation of the new process. We have expanded HRP from our first location to our entire enterprise, and are beginning to see the benefits through a reduction in the number of injuries and an increase in the identification of possible hazards and stop the job triggers. This presentation would share some of our learnings, beginning with basic concepts of HRP, through the rollout and training phases, and on through implementation. As they say, it is journey, not a destination!
